The Product

The Product

Information is power, and sometimes information and controlling the narrative is what separates top brands from other brands. As a brand that cares about it’s customers and reputation, it’s important to not just have a good product or service but also have first hand information on what people are saying about the brand, which is what brand monitoring tries to solve, to give brands a constant ear to make intentional and better marketing and PR decisions. Sublime is a media evaluation company that analyzes and reports brands media performance through print and online monitoring.

The goal of this project is to automate some of the media evaluation process of Sublime, from data input to data authorization to data/mechanical analysis to report generation and delivery

My role

My role

The project was to automate the report generation process of Sublime to make their workflow easier and faster. The team is made up of a product designer, product manager and the engineering team. I led the design of the product from start to finish and created the prototype for both the Admin and Customer’s web application.

I sent out an open-ended questionnaire to the Sublime employees to better understand who we are making this for, their challenges, and what they do. Five people answered the questionnaire, from the trainees to the Assistant Business Manager.

Research Findings and insights

Research Findings and insights

From the responses, we discovered these insights:

  1. All Analysts perform the same job descriptions

  2. There are two levels of approval of data to be sent to the client:

a. Analysts: This includes Media analyst trainees to Senior media analyst III

b. Supervisors: This includes Senior media analyst I to Assistant business manager.

  1. Currently, all tasks are carried out manually except sourcing of online media coverage

  2. Analysts and Supervisors would prefer to do data gathering, data entry, and SWOT analysis manually

  3. Analysts and Supervisors would prefer if reports, data analysis, and mechanical analysis are automated.

  4. Analysts would like to work offline and reduce errors.

Defining the Problem Statement

Defining the Problem Statement

  • 💡 Problem Statement 1: Kelvin is an Analyst at Sublime who needs to input data with ease and automate the data analysis process because he needs to deliver reports for approval on time.

  • 💡 Problem Statement 2: Chisom is a Supervisor at Sublime who needs to deliver reports to clients on time because customer retention goes hand in hand with timely delivery

Based on the research, I came up with the Information Architecture diagram to guide the design on the report generation process for the admin’s interface.

Wireframes

Wireframes

After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the data management system web application (Admin’s interface). Based on the research insights, I created two different interfaces; the analyst’s interface and the supervisor’s interface. Below are some screens of the Supervisor’s wireframe. The analyst's platform is similar, the differences are:

  • Supervisors create the profile for each brand that data is to be inputted for

  • Supervisors approve the report that goes to the client's dashboard

  • Supervisors can download report if need be

Usability Study

Usability Study

We carried out a moderated usability study with the potential users (Staff of Sublime) at their office. These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study

  • Supervisors cannot edit: The staff would prefer if supervisors do not edit data inputted by analysts

  • Timestamp to show last editor: There should be a “last edited” stamp for easy collaboration and accountability

Iteration after Usability Study

Iteration after Usability Study

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like:

  • Adding a comments section between supervisors and analysts as supposed to supervisors editing analysts' work.

  • Added a “submitted by” and “supervised by” indication on the interface

  • Added an extra notification indicator

My takeaways from this projects

My takeaways from this projects

Working on this project was exciting because this way my first time designing a product in the data/media monitoring space. I learned that even though the problem I was trying to solve was a big one, diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me come up with solutions that were both feasible and useful.
